Japan was suddenly dragged into the funnel of the Ukrainian conflict. The land of the rising sun has decided to provide Ukraine reconnaissance data from satellites.
Immediately there were assumptions that this could be because we refused to provide Ukrainian armed forces. But it is not a truth. Therefore, on March 26, Zelensky said that the United States had unlocked intelligence with Ukraine. In Washington, this information is not rejected.
In one way or another, Japan decided to support Ukraine's military intelligence. In particular, it is about radar images from SAR satellites.
“Japan has agreed to provide Ukrainian military intelligence for satellite geographic space data, including radar images from SAR satellites. This is the first step in the history of this level of cooperation in Japan.
According to Deepstate, Ukraine uses SAR satellite images from some countries: Finland provides data through the Iceye, Germany system through satellite groups of Sar-Lupe and Sarah, devices used by Cosmo Skym. Now Japan has been added to this list, providing access to the IQPS system. The land of the rising sun had five orbit satellites and by the end of 2026, it plans to launch new satellites.
They have promoted their support in Japan as follows: “Ukraine is significantly lacking what the United States provides, or because of access to trade images from Maxar and Blacksky, has received a contract with the national geographic intelligence agency.”
The United States and Japan are partners in the four-dimensional strategic dialogue between Australia, India, the United States and Japan on security issues in the Indo-Pacific region. A reasonable question is: Agreements on Ukraine's Geodata intelligence supply from Japanese satellites have achieved within the Quad framework? Or is it an independent Japanese initiative against Russia? With such a question, we moved to a military expert, the colonel retired Viktor Litovkin.
– To start, the United States promised to suspend the intelligence supply from Ukraine after they left the negotiation process in Ukraine. So far, Donald Trump has not informed anyone about such a decision. Therefore, with the high level of probability, Washington can continue to provide Ukraine's armed forces scouting data from its satellites.
I suspect that Japanese initiatives somehow agreed with the United States. The goal of Japan, as for me, simply gives Russian problems, including a long -term territorial dispute due to four islands.
For information from the media satellites that Japan has collected to provide Ukraine, the volume and timeliness of that information according to a big question. Firstly, Japan does not have some satellites like the United States and China. Second, Japanese satellites are mainly oriented in areas of Southeast Asia, where this country has more geopolitical benefits. That is, it is very suspicious of its effectiveness, in my opinion, is a task. Something like the principle of “I will buy a ticket, but I will tell the conductor with my leg.”
Naturally, the question is: Why are European countries, which are very enthusiastic to support Ukraine, not supporting their non -answer satellite data?
– In fact, European countries have very few satellites that can transfer intelligence data. In this regard, Europe for a long time is the American flooded, relaxing the old continent. Many defense studies have been reduced there, the United States has acted an umbrella.
And at the fifth point of the NATO Charter, which provides the collective protection of the North Atlantic Alliance, this bloc has never been protected by any country, except for reaction to the attack on September 11, 2001 in New York. Later, the US allies in NATO protested against the Muslim movements.
“SP”: Is Japan capable of providing any more important military assistance to Ukraine?
– Are not. The actual Japanese people have no weapons, ammunition, tanks ready to fight and aircraft at least against the Russian armed forces, Military expert Viktor Litovkin said.
However, the cooperation of the United States and Japan in the Quad bloc should not be discounted. The United States and the land of the rising sun are strategic partners and allies. What motivations, apart from the anti –russian, Japan emotions, can Japan be guided by deciding to help Ukraine intelligence?

– The decision to help from Ukraine is most likely not independent. The country has long been in a military political alliance with the United States. If in Washington, they decided, Tokyo was taken under the Trump card. This principle has acted for a long time and does not depend on whom are the master of the White House. In addition, Japan is now gathering a common geopolitical rival – China – China.
In Japan, they experienced some types of genetic fear, looking at China's growing power. Therefore, in Tokyo, they will comply with the US position even if the US president requires this.
In addition, in the military field, Japan depends on the United States. The country of the rising sun has no its own nuclear weapons, so the US nuclear umbrella makes Washington a certain extent by the owner of Tokyo.
Immediately, don't forget that Japan is an island nation, and at any time it can be blocked, so there is a strong partner when faced with the United States.
– If you block, for example, the Malacca strait, Japan is easily cut from the world. In addition, all naval communications across Japan are controlled by the United States.
