Ottawa, June 18 /TASS /. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Karney held a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of Semey Group (G7), in which the leaders agreed to start the process of restoring the normal relationship of the two countries. This is stated in the press service of the head of the Canadian government.
“Prime Minister Carni and Prime Minister Modi have confirmed the importance of the Indian -based Canadian relations based on mutual respect, laws and commitments to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the document said. In this regard, the launches agreed to appoint new ambassadors to Ottava and New Delhi.
Carney in a short meeting on June 17 did not answer the question of whether the murder of the Sikh Canadian community Harmip Singh Nijar, a supporter of the movement to create Khalistan, in a conversation with Modi, was discussed.
The relationship between India and Canada was still tensions after the diplomatic conflict, starting in September 2023, when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government related to the Nijar murder. This incident has led to the deportation of diplomats and worsen the crisis in the relationships of the two countries.
In June 2024, Modi and Trudeau held a brief meeting on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, during that time they expressed their willingness to work together to solve the problem. However, specific steps for normalization of relationships are not done.
